Music

After presenting herself in 2023 at the Liceu with 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, the Serbian artist and mother of performance Marina Abramović presents Balkan Erotic Epic, one of the most daring and provocative works of this extraordinary artist. This unclassifiable show that moves between dance and performance combines elements of the tradition of performative art with sensuality and eroticism, reflecting Abramović's constant exploration of the body, sexuality, and the limits of human experience. The work is inscribed in the cultural context of the Balkans, a place loaded with history, conflict, and a rich cultural tradition, making the piece not only an aesthetic challenge but also a profound reflection on the identity and political and social tensions of the territory.

In Balkan Erotic Epic, Abramović merges eroticism with folk traditions and the myth of the Balkans, creating a work of great visual and emotional power. Apart from being an exploration of eroticism, the piece also explores the emotions, tensions, and contradictions inherent in the region's culture. The artist uses the body as a means of expression, but also as a space to question the social and political norms related to sexuality, violence, and power.

The work is structured as a series of performative acts that interweave elements of dance, theater, music, and multimedia. The piece stands out for its powerful visual images, which include a series of provocative and highly symbolic images that seek to alter and challenge perception. Through the use of dance and movement, the performers and dancers manage to convey intense emotions, often charged with a primordial and wild energy, while the music, mostly of Balkan origin, reinforces the unique atmosphere of the work.

One of the most striking aspects of Balkan Erotic Epic is its ability to integrate the physical and psychological aspects into a visual narrative. Eroticism is not simply represented superficially, but becomes a language that communicates both the beauty and violence of human relationships. The work explores how desire, passion, and power interweave in a complex way and challenge gender and sexual conventions, while allowing the audience to confront their prejudices and expectations about these themes.

In terms of its staging, the work uses a symbolic use of space and lighting to enhance the visceral and moving atmosphere. The minimalist and extremely effective scenography cooperates in its ability to focus attention on the bodies of the performers, who are fully engaged in a series of rituals, movements, and gestures that often blur the line between what is grotesque and what is sublime. Bodies become objects of desire, conflict, and power. Marina Abramović's latest creation, an unpredictable artist who is a legend, on the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
