In La truita, a couple approaching retirement age has just moved to a small village to open a little organic bakery. New house, new life, as they say. One Sunday, they gather their three daughters and their partners to celebrate the father's birthday.

The middle daughter, however, arrives with a fish: a trout. As a lacto-pesco-vegetarian, she won't eat the beef her mother has lovingly prepared. In fact, this will be the main topic of conversation. Why doesn't she do what everyone else does? What does it mean to "have convictions"? And convictions about what, exactly? Is it appropriate to defend our convictions when they hurt others?

Meanwhile, the father has an important announcement to make. As the author explains, in La truita "I wanted to talk about those we don't notice, those we never take an interest in, rendered invisible not for political reasons (which is what we do with the violent, the insane, or the poor), but simply by omission, by lack of interest. Those who, generation after generation, think about the world, try to represent it or see themselves in it, but ultimately never do."

La truita is about love, food, family, death, love, generations, universal values, communitarianism, the present day. Its relentless structure is formed of three parts: starter, main course, and dessert.
