Dreams are landscapes of shadows and light, fragments of a universe that only art can make tangible
Guzmán unfolds a universe where the limits of matter dissolve to give way to forms that seem to emerge from a historic state. His sculptures, created from dreams and materials like aluminum, become bridges between the tangible and the intangible. Each piece seems like a snapshot of a dream, capturing an ephemeral moment and transforming it into a permanent work that invites contemplation.
His work plays with concepts such as gravity and balance, as Guzmán combines delicate structures with heavy materials, creating a dialogue between fragility and strength. These sculptures not only speak to the act of dreaming but also to the human condition: a precarious balance between desires and reality, between what we imagine and what we can achieve.
Also the author of installations that are conceived as immersive experiences transforming the exhibition space into a stage where sculptures interact with light, shadows, and spectators. Pursuing theatricality, the works not only occupy a physical place but also create atmospheres and open spaces for reflection and emotional connection.
In this context, Guzmán seeks to establish an intimate relationship between the work and the spectator. Each piece acts as a mirror reflecting the viewer's own experiences and aspirations. This capacity to generate multiple meanings is one of the keys to the success of his work: his dreams are not only his own but also ours.
Guzmán reaffirms his place as one of the great storytellers of contemporary sculpture. His work transcends form and material to become a vehicle of thought and emotion, a space where the boundaries of reality fade away and dreams come to life. El Gran Teatre del Liceu invites Guzmán to undertake a personal and family exorcism exercise based on the aria "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'elisir d'amore, which opens a window to his creative universe and also extends an invitation to rediscover the transformative power of art. As the artist says: "Dreams are the first sculptures we create; my work is to give them volume and voice."
Gonzalo Guzmán (Madrid, 1991) is one of the most evocative sculptors in the contemporary scene, capable of transforming dreams into tangible forms and giving a poetic voice to materials. Trained in Industrial Design at Elisava (Barcelona) and ECAL (Switzerland), his work is articulated through the fusion of imagination and matter, creating pieces that challenge perception and explore the boundaries between reality and the oneiric.
After starting his career in the design world, Guzmán transitioned to sculpture with the AFTER series, presented at Utopía 126 in Barcelona in his first solo exhibition. In this work, conceived during the confinement, he transformed into metallic volumes the forms that appeared in his dreams: megalithic structures, symbolic dolmens, suggesting a dialogue between memory, the subconscious, and the persistence of emotions.
In 2023, his work had a new projection at Galería Senda as part of Art Nou with Collisión, an exhibition where stainless steel became the vehicle for an exploration of perception and the fragility of the real. The central piece, a three-meter stalactite suspended over a reflective surface, suggested an imminent collision that, nonetheless, never actually occurred, thus evoking the tension between matter and the ephemeral, between the visible and the invisible.
