Born in Copenhagen to a Swedish-Danish family, after receiving lessons from his father from a very early age, he made his solo debut at the age of fourteen performing the Elgar concerto with the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen. From 2007 to 2011, he studied at the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson.
Among his most notable recent orchestral engagements are appearances with the London Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic, the Yomiyuri Nippon Symphony, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Leipzig Radio Symphony, the Hamburger Symphoniker, the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, as well as all of the major orchestras in the Nordic countries. He has worked with many distinguished conductors, including Andris Nelsons, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Philippe Herreweghe, Vasily Petrenko, Thomas Dausgaard, Pablo Heras-Casado, Andrew Manze, Sakari Oramo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Robin Ticciati, and Heinrich Schiff.
Among the musicians who have inspired and profoundly influenced him are pianist Bengt Forsberg and violinist Nils-Erik Sparf, with whom he has played in various chamber music formats. He has also collaborated with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Gidon Kremer, Joshua Bell, Vadim Repin, Nikolaj Znaider, Lawrence Power, and Paul Badura-Skoda. Recently, he formed a trio with violinist Veronika Eberle and pianist Shai Wosner. Together with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, he is also part of the artistic direction of the Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival.
He has performed in halls such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Wigmore Hall, Tonhalle, Concertgebouw, Palau de la Música Catalana, Mozarteum, and the Metropolitan Theatre of Tokyo. He also performs at festivals such as Verbier, Lockenhaus, Jerusalem, Stavanger, Bergen, Risør, Kuhmo, and Wiener Festwochen. He has been a member of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society.
His first album, featuring the cello concertos of Tchaikovsky, Schumann, and Saint-Saëns with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, was released by EMI in 2008, and since then his discography has continued to grow. More recently, he released a CD with both Haydn cello concertos with the period ensemble Concerto Copenhagen, conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen. His latest release, 48 Strings, features music for one, two, four, and twelve cellos, and pays homage to the four greatest cellists of the early 20th century. Another of his notable projects is a video recording of Piatti's 12 Caprices, available on YouTube and Apple Music.
Winner of the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in 2006 and the International Paulo Cello Competition in 2007, he has received musical prizes and scholarships, including the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2008, BBC New Generation Artist 2008-2011, and the Rising Star tour of the European Concert Hall Organization in the 2008/09 season. In 2015, he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in Copenhagen.
He plays the Stradivarius "Boni-Hegar" of 1707, which has been made available to him thanks to the generous support of Norwegian art collector Christen Sveaas.
