Liceu and La Fenice join their orchestras in a New Year's Concert to celebrate music as a bridge between cultures
The New Year's Concert of the Gran Teatre del Liceu brings together the exceptional voices of Saioa Hernández and Xabier Anduaga, under the direction of Riccardo Frizza, in a unique evening celebrating passion for opera and vocal excellence.
"Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable," wrote Leonard Bernstein, reminding us that sound art is perhaps the purest form of transcendence. With this spirit of communion and hope, the Gran Teatre del Liceu celebrates its New Year's Concert, an event that aims to become a reference on the musical calendar, where tradition, emotion, and artistic excellence merge into a single gesture.
In this first proposal, the event acquires a particularly symbolic dimension: for the first time, the Liceu Orchestra will share the stage with the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra of Venice, under the direction of the prestigious Riccardo Frizza, to establish a sonic and emotional bridge between two historical institutions united by the same passion for opera and its universal language.
This artistic collaboration and twinning between Liceu and La Fenice, two emblematic opera houses of Barcelona and Venice, cities bathed by the Mediterranean, also symbolizes the shared resilience after the fire tragedy that struck them in the nineties. Two theaters with more than a century and a half of history that, today, join forces in a musical dialogue full of complicity and future projection.
Frizza, renowned for his gestural elegance and deep knowledge of the Italian repertoire, will be the soul of this project, guiding a single symphonic ensemble made up of the two orchestras in a program that will highlight the richness of bel canto, the solemnity of the symphonic repertoire, and the characteristic luminous spirit of these dates.
The concert will also feature the special participation of two exceptional figures: Saioa Hernández and Xabier Anduaga, two voices that embody the new generation of international lyrical singing. Hernández, endowed with a broad and dramatically intense voice, capable of elevating each phrase with truly theatrical intensity, has conquered the most prestigious stages in Europe. Anduaga, on the other hand, is one of the most admired tenors of his generation, possessing a bright singing line, refined phrasing, and stage energy that make him a magnetic artist.
Together, under Frizza's inspired baton, they will bring to life a program that combines opera fragments and characteristic pieces of this period, celebrating unity, memory, and the future of two sister institutions. An evening that becomes an emotional journey of great beauty and an authentic meeting space through music.
