Open Doors

For Santa Eulàlia, the MMB organizes an open day at the museum. A great opportunity to stroll through the halls of the Royal Shipyards, with more than 700 years of history, and to explore all our exhibitions, among which we highlight "Infamy. Catalan participation in colonial slavery" and the new area of the permanent exhibition "7 Ships, 7 Stories" about refugees.

Infamy

Catalan participation in colonial slavery Exhibition that delves into the involvement of Catalans in the Atlantic trafficking of captive people to be enslaved. To what extent were the businesses of Catalan merchants, especially in Cuba and Puerto Rico, built on enslaved labor? How much of that capital was repatriated to Catalonia? In what way did those profits from slavery contribute to the development of the country in the 19th century? We invite you to visit this exhibition and explore a little-known and uncomfortable aspect of the History of Catalonia.

SOS Oceans!

The Patapum gang to the rescue The first issue of the children's magazine Patapum was born in September 2018. We have already spent nearly 7 years sharing many adventures at sea and with navigation with children! Visit the exhibition "SOS Oceans! The Patapum gang to the rescue" and get ready to experience a great adventure with the Patapum gang, helping them solve one of the great problems threatening the oceans: waste in the seas and oceans. Children and adults will discover the Patapum characters, solve a whole set of interactive games and learn about the creative process behind this quarterly newsletter.

Hop on board! Instant Photos

The camera has always offered opportunities for play since its invention, almost two centuries ago, but only people with money could have their portrait taken on ships. For ordinary people, the solution came from humble professionals who traveled from town to town during celebrations with a handmade camera, a decorated cloth, and some props. These people were known as minuteros, they took "instant" photos and delivered them to their clients at once. The exhibition recreates some of the images preserved by the Maritime Museum of Barcelona so that, with today's mobile devices, we can continue to play. Are you in?

7 Ships, 7 Stories

In every era and on every sea, ships have been the tools enabling humans to trade, travel, discover, fight, and now also enjoy. Ships are machines, but they have their own personality, name, and character, as any sailor can confirm. A ship is a vehicle, but it is also a container-for things and people, and even for experiences, stories, and myths. All the pieces in the exhibition are part of the MMB's collections. Recently, with the aim to offer a more current and committed perspective, the MMB has added a new area to the exhibition dedicated to people seeking refuge by crossing the sea.

Shipyards and Galleys

Exhibition dedicated to the Shipyards and the world of galleys. Nearly 1,500 m2 of route through the city's maritime culture invite you to discover the history of the Shipyards building. Based on knowledge derived from archaeological research and the study of the building in recent years, we can learn more about its architectural evolution and uses over time.

Catalonia Overseas

Three centuries of Catalan seafaring (18th-20th centuries) "Catalonia Overseas" tells the story of the commercial, experiential, and technological revolution of navigation in Catalonia between the 18th and 20th centuries. The exhibition shows the evolution from Mediterranean trade to transatlantic trade, as well as the shift from sailing to steam navigation. Three centuries in which Catalan shipping opened economically and socially to new worlds.

Les Sorres X

A medieval ship Exhibition of Les Sorres X, a small coastal vessel dating from the second half of the 14th century found in Castelldefels during the construction of the Olympic Canal. It was located buried on a water table, which helped preserve the wood, as it remained soaked and protected by a layer of sand about 2 meters thick.

Visit the Santa Eulàlia schooner!

The Museum actively conserves, in the water, a collection of vessels that allow visitors to see first-hand what a ship is, how it works, and how it is handled. The historic and traditional ships are a living testimony to maritime culture and history. Our fleet consists of ten vessels, among which we highlight the Santa Eulàlia, the Formentera Lighthouse, and the Barceloneta Lighthouse. The Santa Eulàlia is a historic ship, built in Torrevella (Alicante) in 1918, and is moored at the Moll de Bosch i Alsina (Moll de la Fusta) in Barcelona.
