Perico Sambeat Quintet — jazz, tradition and modernity

Perico Sambeat, one of Europe's outstanding alto saxophonists and a key figure in Spanish jazz, leads this quintet with a proposal that combines original compositions, standards from the Great American Songbook, and pieces with Latin American influences. His work as a performer, composer and arranger has earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2003, as well as recognition for best recording of the year for Flamenco Big Band in 2008 and 2009.

Throughout his career, Sambeat has shared the stage and studio with musicians of the highest calibre, such as Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tete Montoliu, Michael Brecker or Pat Metheny, leading over a hundred albums and establishing himself as one of the most significant artists Spain has produced in the jazz field.

The quintet accompanying him is formed by Matyas Gayer on piano, Masatoshi Kamaguchi on double bass, Stephen Keogh on drums and Pol Olmedes on trumpet. The band enables a dynamic, nuanced musical dialogue, capable of ranging from classic and modern jazz to Latin jazz, with vibrant improvisations and a constant interaction between musicians. Sambeat has stated in interviews with In & Out Jazz that he prefers the music to "speak for itself," letting the nuances naturally follow the development of each piece, without resorting to radically expressionist gestures, always seeking naturalness.

The concert repertoire includes new compositions by Sambeat himself, some reinterpreted standards, and pieces with Latin influences, offering a show where the technique, sensitivity, and experience of all the musicians come together to create unique moments of improvisation and expression.
