Palau Martorell is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the artist Petr Kvì?ala (Czech Republic, 1960). After more than 40 years of work, Prelude marks his debut in Spain. Curated by Rubén Torres, the show brings together Kvì?ala's work from the last decade: a selection of pieces that explore the relationships between form, color, scale, and spatial dimension.
“Petr Kvì?ala occupies a unique position within the contemporary art scene. Over more than four decades, he has developed an unmistakably personal visual language in which freedom and precision coexist,” explains Torres. “His paintings possess a powerful physical presence. Repetition becomes method, discipline, and mantra: returning again and again to certain gestures and structures leads to new decisions and discoveries.”
The result is lines, circles, curves, and squares (named Gaps, Shadows, Crystals, Graffiti, etc.) that stretch across the surface, repeated and altered; seemingly simple geometric shapes that acquire cadence, tension, and unexpected complexity. In this process, ornament is not understood as mere decoration, but as a generative principle through which order opens up to transformation: changes in scale, density, color, and intensity.
“His compositions produce sensations of vibration and dynamism, inviting the viewer's gaze—and ultimately, their own body—to move along with them. This rhythmic energy conveys joy and vitality, while the meditative quality of repetition introduces a subtle spiritual dimension,” the curator continues.
Constancy and continuity constitute one of the essential aspects of Kvì?ala's contribution. In the face of acceleration and the relentless quest for novelty, the artist has demonstrated how sustained artistic research over time can remain open, active, and relevant.
Like the opening movement of a composition, Prelude is a point of departure, and Barcelona is the stage for this new chapter, where the pulse of Kvì?ala's painting enters into dialogue with the historical architecture of Palau Martorell. The works transform the rhythms and proportions of the halls, creating a dynamic relationship between painting, architecture, and viewer. Here, Prelude reveals the artist's ability to transform not only the pictorial surface but also the spaces inhabited by his works.
