The modernist comedian Ramon Reventós (1880-1923), friend of Picasso and chronicler of satirical Barcelona in the early 20th century, returns to bookstores with "A Centaur on La Rambla" (Editorial Medusa), an anthology of texts selected by Enric Gomà.
The volume will be presented on November 11 at 7 pm at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. The event will feature the participation of Gomà, Laia Reventós, Malén Gual, and Margarida Cortadella, and will serve to pay tribute to the comedian and writer who was a friend of Picasso.
"A Centaur on La Rambla" recovers the costumist and satirical work of Ramon Reventós (1880-1923), one of the great literary chroniclers of modernist Barcelona. Enric Gomà, writer and linguistic disseminator, has selected the texts with the aim of reclaiming an almost forgotten voice. According to him, "Reventós combines the urban costumism of Emili Vilanova with the irony of Rusiñol and the wit prior to Calders; he is a lost link of our humoristic narrative."
The volume gathers a selection of prose published in magazines such as Papitu, Picarol, L'Esquella de la Torratxa, or Revista Nova, which had never been brought together in a book. The illustrations by Alba Feito accompany the texts with a playful and contemporary spirit, in dialogue with the sensitivity of the author.
Ramon Reventós, comedian and friend of Picasso
Journalist and short story writer, Reventós was one of the most original voices of his time for his critical and demystifying gaze. He collaborated in magazines such as Arte Joven ? directed by Picasso ?, Pèl & Ploma, Papitu, and Picarol, the latter under his direction between 1912 and 1913. The friendship with Pablo Picasso was forged in the circle of Els Quatre Gats. The artist published a text by Reventós in Arte Joven and, years later, paid tribute by illustrating his stories "El capvespre d'un faune" and "El centaure picador" in the Catalan edition of "Dos contes" (1947). He also made several portraits of Ramon and his brother Jacint, now preserved in the Picasso Museum. Picasso confessed to Jacint Reventós: "Look at how much I loved your uncle, that I copied all his stories by hand to make him known in Paris."
The presentation at the Picasso Museum is, thus, a symbolic return to this literary and artistic friendship that marked Barcelona's culture in the 20th century. On November 11 at 7 pm, the Events Room of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona: presentation of "A Centaur on La Rambla."
