Maundy Thursday processions

Bloody Way of the Blood. Thursday, April 17

The Blood Procession is documented to have taken place around the year 1570, making it the oldest processional mysteries in Spain.

The Way of the Cross took place for the first time in 1601 as part of an agreement with the parish of El Pi to carry out the Holy Week cults. During the 17th and 18th centuries and the first half of the 19th century, the Blood Procession became one of the central events of Holy Week in Barcelona. With the extinction of the guild corporations in 1842, the procession began to decline and gradually lost participation until it definitively disappeared around the year 1900. However, the Bloody Way of the Blood continued to take place in public until 1936, the beginning of the Civil War. It was resumed in 1939 and continued until the 1970s, when it began to be held inside the Basilica.

The Way of the Cross will be carried out with the Venerable Image of the Holy Christ of the Blood, a three-meter sculpture of Jesus on the cross, and also the mystery or passage of the Virgin Mary of Sorrows with an 18th-century sculpture of the Virgin. Fourteen stops will be made, reading biblical passages corresponding to the fourteen stations of the Passion of Christ, commemorating the sufferings of Jesus, from Judas's betrayal to his burial.

Organized by the Royal and Illustrious Archconfraternity of the Most Pure Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, it will take place on Maundy Thursday, April 17 from 9:00 to 10:30 p.m. The start and end will be at the headquarters of the Archconfraternity, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi.

This procession does not pass through La Rambla: departure from the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi (Plaça del Pi), Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, Carrer de la Palla, Carrer dels Banys Nous, Carrer del Call, Plaça de Sant Jaume, Carrer del Bisbe, Carrer de la Pietat, Plaça de Sant Iu, Pla de la Seu, Carrer de Santa Llúcia, Carrer del Bisbe, Plaça de Cucurulla and arrival at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi (Plaça del Pi).
