The heartbeat of La Rambla and its metamorphosis-from a simple stream to the most strolled and sought-after place in the world.

Originally formed as a river valley, La Rambla went from being the natural route for transit and communication-formed in an old riverbed-to becoming an important road during the Roman era, with archaeological remains that testify to the life of the city of Barcino.

During the medieval centuries, it became established as a commercial and social center, with the creation of markets and the activity of artisans and farmers, basket weavers, potters, and also the creation of iconic spaces.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, La Rambla became a cultural center with the arrival of theaters and the royal court in Barcelona. From a city wall with five gateways, such as the Trentaclaus gateway-the most recently unearthed during ongoing works on La Rambla.

With industrialization and the growth of tourism in the 19th century, La Rambla continued transforming following European and American trends, becoming a place of commerce and entertainment. In the 20th century, despite social conflicts, new cultural spaces supported its revitalization.
