Route: "X-ray of Plaça de Catalunya" (Catalan)

Sunday, October 11 at 11 a.m. we invite you to the route "Radiography of Plaça de Catalunya."

It is the epicenter of the city. The yolk of the egg. The kilometre zero. Public transport hub and boundary between Ciutat Vella and l'Eixample. Meeting point for locals and tourists. Stage for celebrations, demonstrations, and gatherings of all kinds. Ildefons Cerdà had planned it as a block of houses, the 19th century turned it into an open field with public life, and in 1927 the then King Alfonso XIII inaugurated it as the central square it is today. Despite its undeniable importance (or precisely because of it), the square is often unfamiliar to the residents and passersby who frequently cross it.

This vibrant and much-discussed space holds surprises for us. For example, not everyone knows that it features buildings by the architects Pere Bassegoda, Enric Sagnier, or Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Even fewer know that there was a project to erect the tallest skyscraper in Europe there in 1930. We will walk around its perimeter and then through its interior with the aim of deepening our discovery of a part of the city we have crossed countless times. We propose you change your perspective on Plaça de Catalunya, leaving behind that of the rushed citizen and replacing it with that of the curious wanderer.
