The Rambla Vila del Llibre

On Sunday, December 14th at 5pm, and within the framework of La Rambla Vila del LLibre, Friends of La Rambla is organizing the presentation of "Silenciades" by the writer and neighbor of La Rambla, Tona Pous.

The presentation will take place at the Little Tonino Piano Club on La Rambla 19.

«... And he's gone, and I've taken up the pen as if I had to continue his work (...)
I want to give life to thoughts with signs, bits of existence that dance in the nights (...) Suddenly I want them to come back (...) And they have already fled and I can't paint them again (...) That's why I have to write, to hold them tightly, so they never escape again…»

February 15, 1819. The Baron of Maldà has died. Teresa Blanch, a bookseller and printer from the incipient Catalan bourgeoisie, feels the urgent need to record from the fleeting past to the escaping present, like her old friend. In her writings, Teresa talks to us about her family life, her city, her time — a very convulsive and changing time —, her economic, sentimental, and cultural interests. She speaks of a male chauvinist and patriarchal society that silences women, that sacrifices their talent as businesswomen, writers, composers, or political agitators. It can tolerate them but always under a certain surveillance and never publicly acknowledge them. Like them, the city is also silenced, a lively and suspicious city always facing established power.

Engaging, agile, sometimes very harsh, and at other times very tender, Silenciades sketches through Teresa's life a journey through the agitated last third of the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th, a crucial period in Barcelona's history.

LA RAMBLA, BARCELONA
