Exhibitions

This exhibition features a selection of works, objects, and documents that highlight the quality of the pictorial approach of Tomàs Moragas i Torras (1837-1906), who became one of the foremost exponents of Fortunyism and a renowned painter recognized internationally. Light, costumbrismo, and orientalism are the main themes of his work, following one of the most sought-after pictorial trends by the European and North American markets. The precision of his stroke, preciosity, and vibrant colors achieved through the study of light are some of his distinguishing features.

The exhibition presents outstanding compositions that Moragas created during his long stays in Rome (1858-1864, 1866-1869, and 1872-1876), but also during his trip to Granada (1871-1872), where he went at the request of his friend Fortuny, and finally works from the period when the painter decided to return definitively to Barcelona until his death (1876-1906).

Tomàs Moragas (1837-1906) and the Roman Adventure is an exhibition that reclaims and explains Moragas' work in context, drawing links and comparisons with other contemporary artists with whom the painter established personal and/or artistic affinities. Like Moragas, many of them experienced the Roman adventure by following the light of Fortuny, which, like a beacon, opened a path full of visual possibilities and new perspectives. Other creators such as Marià Fortuny himself, Nicolau Raurich, Enric Serra, Baldomer Galofre, Martín Rico, Antoni Fabrés, or Joan Roig, among many others, are present and engage in dialogue with Moragas' work, restoring the relevance of Fortunyism, which was key in the art market of the second half of the nineteenth century.
