Crossing the doors of the
PalaMoja
means discovering how the upper bourgeoisie of 18th and 19th century Barcelona lived. It was owned by two prominent citizens of the city, who turned it into a meeting point for high society of that time.Josep de Copons, Marquis of Moja, and his wife Maria Lluïsa Descatllar, commissioned its construction to the architect Josep Mas. The building was inaugurated in 1784, combining Baroque elements with influences of French Neoclassicism. Notable from this first period are the Grand Hall, with paintings by Francesc Pla, "El Vigatà", and the façades. Curiously, the main entrance is on Portaferrissa Street. At that time, La Rambla was still a stream that was just beginning to be urbanized.
In 1870, the Marquis of Comillas, father-in-law of Eusebi Güell, bought the palace and adapted it to the taste of the time. One of the most visible reforms was the grand staircase. Also from that time are the blue, pink, and green lounges. Jacint Verdaguer lived there for 15 years as chaplain and almoner of the family.
After the fire in 1971, the palace was abandoned for eleven years.
Currently, it is the headquarters of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage organizes free guided tours on the second and fourth weekends of each month. Prior reservation is required.
