The Erotic Museum of Barcelona (MEB) inaugurates the exhibition “What is love?”; a journey throughout its entire exhibition that emphasizes some of the works and projects that help reflect on the idea of love.
“We are in February, the month of Saint Valentine, the month of lovers, that is why we want to celebrate it with this exhibition dedicated to love”, states Sarah Rippert, director of MEB. “Saint Valentine at MEB is already an indispensable tradition for the people of Barcelona”, adds the director. The exhibition offers a journey from classical Greece to the early 20th century. Illustration, artistic engraving, and photography to reflect on the same idea, Love.
From love in mythology to great lovers of the 21st century
“When we say Eros we are talking about Love, and this is something that the visitor discovers through our collection”, explains Sigrid Cervera, sexologist of MEB and responsible for the educational project of the institution. “What do we talk about when we talk about love? is one of the questions that we want the visitor to reflect on. After the visit, they will understand why the Erotic Museum of Barcelona is the Love Museum of Barcelona”, says Cervera. “A unique museum, not only in the Spanish State but in the world”, adds the director of MEB, Sarah Rippert.
From the mysterious image of Niankhkhum and Khnumhotep in an Egyptian tomb, to the story of Sappho of Lesbos and Erinna, in a journey that speaks of mythological love stories and others as real as that of the erotic artist, Gerda Wegener. The journey is fascinating because it allows reflecting on love through works by anonymous authors in different cultures, from West to East, and also through the works of great artists, such as Picasso and Dalí. The visitor will be delighted by works portraying great mythological loves, such as Apollo and Hyacinth, and recalling love stories with great media impact, such as that of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The MEB exhibits 8 lithographs from Lennon's Bag One collection, which belongs to its collection.
