Rambla de Mar

We have left the Rambla de Santa Mònica and arrive at the Porta de la Pau. In front of the Drassanes stands the monument to Christopher Columbus, which commemorates the return from his first voyage to America and the fact that his first presentation to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella was in Barcelona. The monument, built in 1886, is the work of the architect Gaietà Buigas Monravà. The large iron column that supports the statue of the navigator is placed atop a stone base. Inside the monument there is an elevator that allows you to go up to the crown at the top, from where you can enjoy a view over the port, Montjuïc, the Drassanes, and the whole city.

Crossing Passeig de Colom, next to the Port Authority building, a wavy wooden walkway called the Rambla de Mar takes us, over the water, to the beginning of Moll d'Espanya. This walkway, designed by Helio Piñón and Albert Viaplana, began operating intermittently in September 1994.

At the end of such an ancient, picturesque avenue enriched by the signs of its history as is Barcelona's Rambla, unique in the world, the recently created Rambla de Mar is a novelty which, among the major works carried out in recent years to open the city to the sea, makes it possible for citizens and visitors to Barcelona, also from the walkway, to see the sea up close.
