Barcelona recovers the ornamental fountains and the irrigation of green spaces
April 9th. 2025
- Progressively, over the next few months, the ornamental fountains of the city will be put into operation, which will be prepared in advance after a two and a half year hiatus due to the drought
- Also, the irrigation restrictions are lifted and the plan to recover the trees and vegetation continues, a process that will finish in the spring of next year
Due to the increase in water reserves, thanks to the rains of the last few weeks, the Catalan Water Agency has deactivated the Hydrological Alert of the Ter-Llobregat Basin that supplies the city of Barcelona. For this reason, the Barcelona City Council lifts the water use restriction measures in the city, although it remains in a pre-alert situation.
With the end of the alert, the ornamental fountains, which have been stopped since November 2022 due to the drought situation, will be put into operation. For some weeks now, the technical teams of Barcelona Water Cycle have been reviewing and preparing the fountains to put them into operation safely.
This measure affects the ornamental fountains of Plaça de Catalunya, which will soon recover their functionality.
Barcelona currently has a total of 330 ornamental fountains, which will progressively resume operation in three phases. Of the 330 fountains, currently 85, 25.7%, have water, because they are shelters for life (biota, flora, or fauna) and therefore were exempt from restrictions. The rest, 245 fountains, 74.2%, are the ones that are dry.
