Green light to renew La Boqueria and enhance it as a unique food market

September 29th. 2025

The Association of Vendors of the Boqueria Market has approved with more than 90% of favorable votes the comprehensive reform project of the premises. The plan, with a minimum investment of 12 million euros, foresees the reconstruction of the fish island, the improvement of accesses and services, the installation of solar panels, and the approval of a new regulation to ensure the balance between traditional and processed products. The works will start next summer and are expected to be completed by 2027.

The reform will focus on the structural part and the comfort of the space. The bathrooms, the air conditioning system, and the office building will be renovated. The facade of the Gardunya square will also be intervened to improve accessibility, and a central corridor will be opened to make circulation smoother and ventilate the market. One of the most notable changes will be the complete renovation of the fish island, an emblematic space for many visitors and regular customers.

Regarding the stall offering, the new regulation approved by the stallholders establishes that, at least, half of them must sell traditional products and that processed products cannot exceed 50% of the total offer. The objective is to preserve the food and unique character of the market while ensuring balance with the presence of products better adapted to new consumption habits.

In the energy field, the asbestos roof will be removed to install photovoltaic panels, within the framework of the municipal plan to make the markets more energy self-sufficient. This aims to reduce both consumption and emissions, in line with the city's sustainability commitments.
