The Barcelona Erotic Museum (BEM) receives the international distinction "Queer Destination"
June 17th. 2025
The Erotic Museum of Barcelona (MEB) consolidates itself as a safe space for the LGBTQI+ community by obtaining the international Queer Destinations Committed seal and joining the "Pride of Museums" program with a guided activity led by the museum's sexologist and head of its educational area, Sigrid Cervera.
In 2025, the MEB reaffirms its commitment to sexual and gender diversity in the celebration of Pride 2025 with two key actions; on one hand, it has been distinguished with the international recognition Queer Destinations Committed, and on the other hand, it becomes part of the cultural program "Pride of Museums" with an educational proposal led by its educational area.
"We are deeply proud to receive the Queer Destinations Committed seal, a distinction that certifies our space as inclusive, respectful, and free of discrimination towards LGBTQI+ people," says Sarah Rippert, director of the MEB. This recognition, endorsed by international institutions and entities, requires the training of the entire museum team in the realities and sensitivities of the community, ensuring a safe, empathetic, and quality experience for visitors and professionals.
A museum that educates in diversity
As part of the "Pride of Museums" program -promoted as part of the general program by the LGTBI Center of Barcelona and the Platform Federation of LGTBI Entities of Catalonia- the MEB presents the activity "LGBTIQA+: A Window to Diversity through the History of Eroticism in Art" on June 19 and 28, from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.
Designed and conducted by Sigrid Cervera, sexologist and head of the educational area of the MEB, this guided tour offers a transversal journey through the representation of LGBTQI+ in erotic art throughout history and across different cultures. From representations of diversity in ancient Egyptian or classical Greek art to the diverse orientation of desires in Asia and America. This proposal stands out for its academic rigor and pedagogical vocation.
"Sexual education and cultural dissemination are not understood without a perspective of diversity. Erotic art is a mirror where we can (re)recognize ourselves and question the limits imposed on bodies and desires," points out Cervera. The tour ends in the Diversity room, one of the most valued in the museum, highlighting the commitment of the MEB as an agent of social transformation.
A Purposeful Pride
June 28 marks the International Day of LGBTQ Pride, a day to continue advocating and firmly advancing in the defense of the rights of individuals who are part of the LGBTQ+ communities. Under the motto "The freedom to be," the Pride 2025 program of the city of Barcelona focuses on the right to live with dignity and fullness all expressions of identity and desire. The Erotic Museum of Barcelona (MEB), located in the heart of La Rambla, joins this celebration not only as a cultural institution but also as a space for reflection, learning, and welcome.
