March 9th. 2026

Last Friday, March 6th, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Bank of Spain signed an agreement whereby the Generalitat buys half of the building that the bank owns in Plaça de Catalunya for 28.4 million euros.

According to the agreement, the Generalitat will keep the upper floors of the building (seven floors with a total area of 13,000 square meters, currently unused), while the Bank of Spain will take the opportunity to refurbish the lower floors, adapting them for new uses that will allow greater public access.

The Generalitat will use this new space as offices for different departments. Since a complete refurbishment of the premises is necessary, the move will not take place until 2033.

For its part, the Bank of Spain plans to locate the main headquarters of Delta-the experimentation and applied technologies laboratory department-and to promote financial education jointly with the Generalitat.

This announcement is excellent news since it involves the recovery of a currently unused space that will contribute to the refurbishment of Plaça de Catalunya and its surroundings.
