"The Mound of Venus," a new temporary exhibition at the Barcelona Erotic Museum (BEM) on the occasion of March 8th

February 27th. 2025

“The Mount of Venus” is the new temporary exhibition with which visitors will be able to delight from March 8th until May 8th at the Erotica Museum of Barcelona (MEB).

The institution inaugurates this new exhibition coinciding with the celebration of March 8th, International Women's Day. “With this exhibition, I wanted to present before their eyes, without taboos, the beauty of the mount of Venus, with hair and without hair”, affirms Polo Picart, the photographer behind these black and white photographs presented in this exhibition under the title “The Mount of Venus”. “We wanted this exhibition to coincide with the celebration of the month dedicated to women to continue with our goal, not only to delight visitors, but to open spaces for reflection”, says the director of MEB, Sarah Rippert.

A personal choice

On more than one occasion, people who have visited my exhibitions have asked me: why do all models have shaved genitalia? My answer is simple: that's how they came on the day of the session! I do not demand shaving and I accept the personal choice of each model”, explains Picart, “personally, as a nude photographer, I find every centimeter of the human body magical and fascinating to photograph. With hair or without hair!”, he adds. The artist shows us the beauty of the mount of Venus in images. “What is right? The answer is that there is no correct way, everyone should be able to do what they want with their own body”, Picart asserts, “we cannot deny that the effect is not the same, it also happens when a man decides to grow a beard, we feel that it's not the same person. But this doesn't make it more or less attractive! It's a matter of preference!”, he affirms.

Hair removal throughout history

With this exhibition, the artist aims to bring to light the idea that nowadays social pressure and beauty standards can influence how we perceive our own bodies. “It's important that each person has the right to do as they please with their pubic hair, there is no single ‘correct’ way to have a body”, says Picart, who highlights that hair removal was adopted in various civilizations since antiquity, becoming a taboo in eras where abundant hair was a sign of health, until reaching contemporary society, where pubic hair removal and shaving have become common practices.

Currently, Picart collaborates with MEB in the Shibari shows that the museum regularly offers in its erotic garden and that this month reach their 100th edition.  From March 6th to March 9th, they will take place at different times coinciding with the inauguration of the new exhibition.
