Security
La Rambla is the most universal promenade and also the most crowded in Barcelona. Every year it receives more than 100,000,000 visitors or, what is the same, more than 300,000 people per day. This high concentration of people attracts a lot of attention from individuals involved in illegal activities, and unfortunately, it also promotes uncivil behavior by a few.
In order to prevent the presence and actions of both groups at La Rambla, the Association works to ensure that all aspects related to coexistence and civility are guaranteed at La Rambla. Periodic meetings are held with the authorities responsible for Public Safety, and solutions to the concerns of the members in terms of security are discussed together. Years ago, under the presidency of Ignasi Torralba, La Rambla led the request of the entities and associations of merchants in Ciutat Vella and the commercial axes of Barcelona in favor of amending the criminal law so that the accumulation of offenses would be considered a crime or, in the case of foreigners, deportation from the country.
From Amics de La Rambla, personalized visits to the establishments are managed by the "Community Police" group of the Municipal Police and the "Proximity Group" of Mossos d'Esquadra.
However, security attention is not exclusively focused on criminal acts, but the Association works to ensure that all aspects related to coexistence and civility become a reality at La Rambla. Therefore, meetings with security forces for special operations such as New Year's Eve or sports events are common. There has also been a request for a law modification regarding street gambling, and since its implementation, La Rambla has been participating in the Institutional Commission for the analysis and treatment of the vandalism phenomenon.
Amics de La Rambla is a regular participant in the Plenary Council for Security and Prevention of the Barcelona City Council and is a member of the City Council. The city's regulations take into account several proposals from our Association to improve security at La Rambla, ensure strict enforcement of the ordinance against incivility, and a more decisive, serious, and permanent intervention to prevent street vending, drug dealing, as well as begging and prostitution in the street.
