The lamppost at the top of La Rambla is in "art deco" style and was part of a frustrated project by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for Plaça de Catalunya. The architect won a public competition for the urbanization of the square. However, the project was never carried out.
Francesc de Paula Nebot finally won a new competition to urbanize the square and decided to maintain the distribution of the lampposts by Puig i Cadafalch. The lamppost was designed by the architect Fèlix de Azúa and was commissioned to the firm Biosca & Botey for its construction. The project underwent many changes and, of the 8 lampposts foreseen in the original project, only one was manufactured, which is the one that can now be seen at the beginning of La Rambla.
Originally located in a roundabout at the top of La Rambla coinciding with the start of the Universal Exposition of 1929, it was later relocated due to urban changes at the beginning of La Rambla, and placed where it is currently located.
