Fountain of Portaferrissa
On the corner of Portaferrissa Street, near La Rambla, we find a fountain from 1604 (currently located at 1680) that was redecorated with ceramics in 1959 and re-inaugurated on October 24 of the same year. It is made with Montjuïc stone with ceramic tiles.
On the ceramics by Joan Baptista Guivernau, installed on the fountain in 1959, we find a text by Pere Voltes that says:
ON SEPTEMBER 24, 1959, THE FEAST OF LA MERCÈ, THE TILE CEILING OF THIS FOUNTAIN WAS INAUGURATED
THE "PORTAFERRISSA GATE" WAS ONE OF THE GATES OF THE SECOND WALL OF BARCELONA, BUILT IN THE 13TH CENTURY. THE IRON BAR WAS ONE OF THE LONGITUDINAL MEASURES USED IN THE CITY - NAMED AFTER IT, AS WELL AS THE STREET THAT LED TO SAID GATE FROM THE CENTER OF THE OLD CITY. IN PORTAFERRISSA STREET, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 16TH CENTURY, THE CASA GRALLA WAS BUILT, A BEAUTIFUL PLATERESQUE BUILDING THAT DISAPPEARED WHEN THE DUQUE DE LA VICTORIA STREET WAS OPENED, AND THE CASA PINÓ OF THE MARQUÉS DE BARBARÁ, ALSO DEMOLISHED IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MOYA PALACE (NOW COMILLAS) IN 1774, LED TO THE DEMOLITION OF THE OLD GATE. NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION - PUERTAFERRISSA - CUCURULLA - BOTERS
The Fountain was built in 1604 next to the Betlem school (corner of La Rambla - Carme). On May 15, 1680, the school's rector requested its relocation because the Jesuits, owners of the school, wanted to build a chapel. The relocation was carried out by the Jesuits who, at the urging of the Consell de Cent, placed it attached to one of the towers of the portal de la Ferrissa, on the wall of La Rambla.
As a result of the construction of Palau Moja, the towers and part of the wall were demolished, which continued to disappear throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but the fountain remained in its place.
