Pla de la Boqueria Fountain
The neoclassical style fountain was embedded in the wall of the former Capuchin convent.
The fountain has three spouts over three mascarons. Above there is a large shield of Barcelona with the symbols of Hercules (the club and the lion's skin). On top of the shield there is an elm tree that has suffered the effects of civic actions on more than one occasion.
Jaume Fabre and Josep M. Huertas talk about the legend surrounding the fountain. It is said that there was a certain reluctance to fetch water from the Font de la Boqueria because on one occasion a finger of a child was found inside one of the pitchers. Nevertheless, due to its location, the fountain became one of the most popular meeting points for the people of Barcelona. Around the fountain - in the Pla de la Boqueria or Pla de l'Os - street vendors and street performances were common.
The author of the fountain is unknown, and it is made of marble on Montjuïc stone. It was inaugurated on December 24, 1830.
The dimensions of the Font del Pla de la Boqueria are 3.17 m high, 2.77 meters wide, and 1.08 m deep.
