The district of La Mercè

La Mercè or the Mar neighborhood is one of the nuclei that form the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.

From its origins, it was one of the main focal points of aristocratic residence in the city, and currently, it is a dynamic and lively neighborhood.

The name comes from the parish of La Mercè, the former church of the convent of the same name.

Carrer Ample is the backbone of the neighborhood and at the same time is the street where the majority of houses and palaces in the neighborhood were built. Among them stood out the one of the Archbishop of Tarragona (where Charles I stayed) and the Palace of the Counts of Santa Coloma. Currently, as an example, we can contemplate the Sessa-Larrard Palace, a magnificent example of Catalan rococo palace.
